British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he commented. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
