A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using such medications must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural support.
